EDUCATION ACT (CAP.327)Bachelor of Dental Surgery – B.Ch.D.– Degree Course (Amendment) Regulations, 2010

IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred upon him by articles 74 (5) and 75 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following regulations made by the Senate of the University of Malta by virtue of the powers conferred upon it by articles 75 and 79 of the said Act:

Citation

1. These regulations may be cited as the Bachelor of Dental Surgery – B.Ch.D. - Degree Course (Amendment) Regulations, 2010 and shall be read and construed as one with Bachelor of Dental Surgery – B.Ch.D. - Degree Course Regulations, 1998, published as Legal Notice 136 of 1998, hereinafter referred to as the “principal regulations”.

Applicability

2. These regulations shall be applicable to courses starting in October 2009 or later.

Amendment of regulation 6 of the principal regulations

3. For regulation 6 of the principal regulations there shall be substituted the following:

Programme of Studies

6. The Board shall publish the programme of studies, comprising all the subjects taught in each year of the Course, their syllabus, and assessments prior to the commencement of each Course.”

Amendment of regulation 7 of the principal regulations

4. For regulation 7 of the principal regulations there shall be substituted the following:

Assessment and Progress

7. (1) The assessment result of each subject of the Course shall be published according to the following marks and grades in descending order of merit:

95% - 100% A+

80% - 94% A

75% - 79% B+

70% - 74% B

65% - 69% C+

55% - 64% C

50% - 54% D+

45% - 49% D

0% - 44% F

(2) The result of each subject shall take into account all parts of the assessment of that subject.

(3) Students shall not be allowed to proceed to the following year of the

Course if they do not pass in all subjects examined.

(4) Students who fail in any assessment in the supplementary session are not allowed to proceed to the following year of the Course but may be allowed by the Board to repeat the year.

(5) Before being allowed to sit for any of the assessments specified in the programme of studies, students must present to the Dean a certificate, signed by the heads of department or co-ordinators concerned, showing that they have completed satisfactorily the schedule of practical and clinical work prescribed for the year.”

Amendment of regulation 8 of the principal regulations

5. For regulation 8 of the principal regulations there shall be substituted the following:

The Final B.Ch.D. Examination

8. (1) The Final B.Ch.D. Examination shall be held in June at the end of the fifth year of the Course.

(2) There shall be a supplementary session of the examinations in September for students who fail in one subject only, and in the following January for students who fail in more than one subject.

(3) The examination shall consist of assessments in the subjects as prescribed in the programme of studies in force at the time.

(4) Students who are referred in a subject/s in the Final B.Ch.D. Examination may sit for the supplementary session in that subject/s as prescribed in paragraph (2) above. If they fail, they shall be deemed to have failed the Final B.Ch.D. Examination as a whole.

(5) Students shall not be allowed to re-sit any subject unless they have satisfactorily followed such courses of studies and/or practical and/or clinical work as the Board may in each case determine.

(6) Students who do not pass the Final B.Ch.D. Examination in the two sessions as prescribed in paragraphs (1) and (2) of this regulation may be allowed by the Board to repeat the fifth year of the Course and to re-sit the Final B.Ch.D. Examination again at the end of that year, under such conditions as the Board may in each case determine.

(7) Students shall not be allowed to sit for the Final B.Ch.D. Examination in terms of paragraph (6) of this regulation more than once.”

Deletion of regulations 9 and 10 of the principal regulations

6. Regulations 9 and 10 shall be deleted.

7. Regulations 11 to 15 shall be renumbered as regulations 9 to 13.

Amendment of Regulation 9 of the principal regulations

8. For regulation 9 of the principal regulations there shall be substituted the following:

Classification of the Award

9. The overall performance shall take into account the performance of the students throughout the Course. The names of students who have passed in each subject of the Final B.Ch.D. Examination shall be published in a list in alphabetical order according to the following:

First Class Honours

100%

- 80%

Second Class Honours (Upper Division)

79%

- 70%

Second Class Honours (Lower Division)

69%

- 55%

Third Class Honours

54%

- 45%”

Deletion of regulations 10, 11, 12 and 13 of the principal regulations

9. Regulations 10, 11, 12 and 13 shall be deleted.
