EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)Diploma in Architectural Studies - Dip. Arch. - Course Regulations, 2003

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30 (5) and 31 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following Regulations made by the Senate of the University of Malta by virtue of the powers conferred upon it by sections 31 and 35 of the said Act:

Citation and Interpretation

1. (1) These regulations may be cited as the Diploma in Architectural
Studies - Dip. Arch. - Course Regulations, 2003.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires -
“the Board” means the Board of the Faculty of Architecture and Civil
Engineering;
“the Board of Studies” means the Board of Studies appointed for the
Course;
“the Course” means the course of studies leading to the Diploma;
“the Diploma” means the Diploma in Architectural Studies - Dip. Arch.; “ECTS” means credits awarded according to the European Credit
Transfer System; and
“the Faculty” means the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering.

Eligibility for the Diploma

3. To be eligible for the award of the Diploma, students must:
(a) be registered as regular students in terms of the Admission
Regulations of the University;
(b) satisfy the Special Course Requirements as stipulated in regulation
4;
(c) successfully complete the course of studies as specified in regulation
10 and satisfy any other requirements prescribed in these regulations; and
(d) satisfy all other requirements prescribed in any other relevant statutes, regulations and bye-laws of the University.

Special Course Requirements

4. Applicants may be registered for the Course according to the provisions of these regulations if they are in possession of the degree of Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering of this University or have a qualification considered equivalent by the Board obtained from an institution recognised by the Senate for the purpose.

Course Duration

5. The Course shall extend over a period of two years of full-time study or three years of part-time study. The Board may allow students to complete the Course in not more than four years.

Programme of Studies

6. (1) The Course shall comprise those areas of study/subjects related to Architecture from the curriculum of the course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Engineering and Architecture (Honours) as directed by the Board.
(2) The Board shall draw up a catalogue of study-units. The catalogue shall indicate the code, title, description and type of each study-unit, the credits assigned to each study-unit, which study-units are compulsory, concurrent or pre-requisites for other study-units, and the methods of teaching and assessment. The Board shall publish the catalogue for the Course prior to its commencement, following the approval of Senate.

Assessment and Progress

7. (1) Credits shall be assigned according to the following grades in descending order of merit: A+, A, B+, B, C+, C, D+, and D. A failure shall be indicated with an F. Incomplete work due to justifiable reasons (illness, approved absence, etc.) shall be indicated with an I. In all other cases the results of uncompleted study-units shall be indicated as F.
(2) Students who fail a study-unit shall be allowed to take a re-sit in that study-unit once only. The maximum grade that may be obtained following a re- sit shall be grade D.
8. (1) Students shall be eligible to proceed to the following year of the Course on obtaining the 20 credits (40 ECTS credits) assigned to each year of the Course.
(2) The Board may allow students who obtain not less than 18 credits (36 ECTS credits) in a year to progress conditionally to the next year of the Course. Students who progress conditionally shall be required to obtain the referred credit/s by the end of the following academic year. Any study-unit may be referred to the following year once only.
(3) Students who are not allowed to proceed to the next year of the Course may be allowed by the Board to repeat the year. Students shall not be allowed to repeat a year more than once during the Course.

Long Essay

9. (1) Students shall be required to submit a Long Essay of not less than five thousand and not more than seven thousand words, on a theme selected by them and related to the subjects covered during the Course, as approved by the Board.
(2) Students who fail the Long Essay shall be allowed to re-submit it once within a period of six months.

Award of Diploma

10. Students shall be considered to have successfully completed the
Course on obtaining 60 credits (120 ECTS credits).

Final Result

11. (1) The final result of students shall take into account their performance in all the study-units and in the Long Essay.
(2) In the final result for the Diploma the names of successful students shall be published in a list in alphabetical order in the following categories:
Pass with Distinction
Pass.
