EDUCATION ACT (CAP. 327)Master of Science - M.Sc. - Degree Course Regulations, 2006 under the auspices of the Faculty of Dental Surgery

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon him by sections 30 (5) and 31 (6) of the Education Act (Cap. 327), the Chancellor of the University of Malta has promulgated the following regulations made by the Senate of the University of Malta by virtue of the powers conferred upon it by sections 31 and 35 of the said Act:

Citation and Interpretation

1. (1) These regulations may be cited as the Master of Science - M.Sc. - Degree Course Regulations, 2006 under the auspices of the Faculty of Dental Surgery.
(2) In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires - “the Board” means the Board of the Faculty of Dental Surgery;
“the Board of Studies” means the Board of Studies appointed for the Course by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board;
“the Course” means the course of studies leading to the degree of Master of
Science - M.Sc.;
“the Degree” means the degree of Master of Science - M.Sc.

Applicability

2. These regulations shall apply to courses starting in October 2005 or later.

Qualifications for Admission

3. (1) The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of the degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (obtained at least two years before the commencement of the Course).
(2) The Board shall recommend to Senate the number of applicants that may be allowed to register for each area of study offered in the Course,

depending on the availability of resources. The number of available places shall be announced at the time of the call for applications.
(3) Applicants shall be selected after an interview by the Board of Studies. The Board of Studies shall take into consideration the following criteria:
(a) the class of the degree;
(b) clinical experience in the area of the proposed study; (c) relevant professional publications; and
(d) the ability to communicate.

Course Duration

4. (1) The Course shall extend over a period of two years of part-time study.

Course Programme

5. (1) The Course shall consist of study-units, to which 90 ECTS credits are assigned, as follows:
(a) taught study-units, to which 32 ECTS credits shall be assigned; (b) clinical attachments, to which 32 ECTS credits shall be assigned;
(c) supervised undergraduate teaching assignments, to which 8 ECTS
credits shall be assigned; and
(d) a dissertation, as approved by the Board, to which 18 ECTS credits shall be assigned.
(2) The Board may direct that the clinical attachment in sedation be held in a dental institution abroad approved for the purpose. In such instances, all costs shall be borne by the student.

The Programme of Studies and the Catalogue of Study-Units

6. (1) The Board shall draw up the programme of studies for the Course, which shall indicate the study-units to be followed in each semester and which study-units are compulsory, concurrent or pre-requisites for other study-units. The Board shall publish the programme of studies for the Course prior to its commencement, following the approval of Senate.

(2) The level, code, title, description and type of each study-unit, the credits assigned to each study-unit, the methods of teaching and assessment, and the lecturer giving the study-unit shall be published in a catalogue of study-units, which shall be published by the Board, following approval by Senate.

Progress and Assessment

7. (1) The study-units of the Course shall be assessed as described in the catalogue of study-units.
(2) Results for the assessment of all the study-units of the Course shall be published as a percentage mark and grade as indicated in the table below:

Both the percentage mark and the grade shall be recorded in the students’ academic record. However, only the percentage mark shall be used for the purpose of calculating the final classification of the Degree.
(3) Students who fail in any taught study-unit shall be allowed a supplementary assessment once only. If unsuccessful, students shall be required to withdraw from the Course. Such a supplementary assessment shall normally have the same mode of assessment as the corresponding first assessment. In supplementary assessments, the maximum marks and grade that may be awarded shall be 45% - grade D.

Dissertation

8. (1) Dissertations presented for the Degree shall:
(a) be work of an advanced or original nature in the students’ area of study; (b) satisfy the Board of Examiners as regards content and presentation; and (c) fulfill the requirements stipulated in the guidelines approved by the
Board as regards format and length.
(2) No dissertation shall be accepted which is identical in substance to a document already submitted for a degree of this or any other university or to any other published material. Students shall, however, not be precluded from incorporating such previous work as may be necessary to the presentation and fuller

understanding of their exposition, provided that the nature and extent of such incorporation are clearly indicated in the dissertation itself.
(3) Students whose dissertation is found unsatisfactory may either fail or may be required by the Board of Examiners to rewrite the document in whole or in part and to re-submit it for examination. Students may re-submit the dissertation not earlier than two months and not later than six months from the notification of the decision by the Board of Examiners.

Award of the Degree

9. (1) The final classification of each student shall take into account the marks obtained in all the study-units of the Course, which shall be weighted according to the number of credits assigned to each study-unit.
(2) The names of students who qualify for the award of the Degree shall be published in a list in alphabetical order classified as follows:
Passed with Distinction
Passed.
